To Be Continued…?

Hey all~

It’s been so many months since I posted last. I’m sure promises were made to post more or be more timely: but here is the skinny

I do love this blog, it got me through some roughh times and I discovered new things to enjoy. However, I’ve been struggling pretty badly with depression and anxiety. I don’t think I mentioned it in previous posts, but my older brother was murdered in the early months of 2016. I’ve been dealing with the emotion roller coaster of this aftermath. Paired with some financial struggles, my heart hasn’t been into putting the effort into reviews. I’ve hardly even kept my Twitter alive. I’ve been too stressed and depressed, probably insecure too, with my writing to properly post anything. As for going on YouTube, even when I finally do get a computer, I may delete the account all together. I’m just not sure if my heart is there to be creative anymore.
So this is the deal. I’m not sure if I will be posting anymore on here. If I’ll keep reviewing my hobbies (honestly I haven’t read a book in months), and try to express my creative side. For now I’ll keep the blog up reply to comments and questions. Whether it stays up or not is unsure: I may take it down due to my failings to keep it going.

Anyways, a bit rambly, but I wanted to be open with my few readers and more honest with myself. Thank you for sticking with me and allowing me to share my thoughts

November Update!

Soooooo…Fallout 4 came out and life kind of stopped. I’ve pretty much been playing that in my off time only. This the lack of updating what so ever!

I’ve come back down to earth a bit though and am working on new posts. Since FO4 is pretty much my PS4 jam right now I decided to download some popular phone games and five those a whirl. They’re accessible during breaks at work so I’ve been pretty consistent in playing them.

Keep an eye out for new posts! In return I’ll stop ignoring the rest of the world and be a regular blogger again~

Canceled Events Due to Threats

Instead of a review I thought I’d touch a little on this topic because it saddens and frustrated me. This isn’t the first, nor probably the last, event canceled at a convention because of violent threats.

It’s upsetting there are people put there who can’t even handle the idea of just talking about certain topics, so they resort to low handed tactics and ruin a perfect opportunity for dealing with issues in the gaming community. I’m not only talking about women in gaming, but there are other issues as well, other forms of harassment. If those people don’t want to listen or participate in these discussions, all they have to do is avoid them instead of ruining it for everyone. They may have felt like they won by having these events not go through, but in my opinion it just sparks more talk in and out of the community about these problems and a negative outlook on those who wish to silence these topics.

Here is an article about some recent cancellations, though a quick web search will reveal more like it. http://www.gamespot.com/articles/in-wake-of-threats-of-violence-sxsw-cancels-two-vi/1100-6431737/

Why all the Swearing? {A Rant}

I’m one of those people who really enjoys finding a snazzy youtube channel and watching people play games. Sometimes demos, or teasers, other times a full on game. Usually it’s because I don’t have that system or would never play the game myself, but want to see what it’s like. Or, I want to see some of the game play in action and watch only some of the video to see if it’s something worth my time. I’m odd that way.

Now, I’m not against people using more colorful words in the the English language, but really only if it is in appropriate places. Such as playing a horror game “What the &^#% was that?” or puzzle game “I have no idea what the hell is going on…” That makes sense, it can give some laughs or understanding, cool beans go you. No, what I don’t get, and what will cause to to write off someone channel for good is someone who is dropping swear words left and right. Now, again, if it’s a horror game and it is really intense, and you’re hit with a jump scare, yeah you may roll with a handful of F-bombs. Yet, do we need to hear you swearing every other word, horror game or otherwise? It is very distracting and honestly makes the person seem so juvenile. This is all my opinion mind you. I don’t understand why they are swearing all the time, do they think it sounds cool or badass? I don’t know, really I just can’t get it.

That’s it really. I won’t watch a person’s channel if they swear all the time because it is boring, distracting, and unprofessional (though I get this isn’t a “real professional job”, doesn’t mean you can’t still act like it) as heck. It’s not like I’m anyone important or am going to break their channel, I just felt it important to put that out there.

If you’re someone who does so in their videos, care to share why? Do you realize you’re doing it? Any readers have the same complaints or a different opinion?

RPG Maker – Game Creation Engine

Ages and ages ago RPG Maker came out, and there have been a handful of versions since then. The one I’m going to talk about is RPG Maker VX Ace, which is the newest version and can be found here. You can buy the initial game all on its own and it comes with a vast amount of tools, images, and some music. There are also bundles and packs you can purchase for whichever version you are using to increase your supply. I’ll get into more about that later.

Quick summary:  RPG Maker’s tagline is: “simple enough for a child, powerful enough for a developer”. (More on that in a bit). In simplest terms, this is a system where you can create, play, and publish your own games in the style of old 2-d (think Nintendo Zelda style). You have tilesets for scenery and objects, pre-made sprites for characters or a generator to make your own, sound effects, music, etc. Everything you need to make a game, from the blades of grass, battle scenes, dialog, and cut-scenes. You can also create and import your own images, music, and files into the game. There is a huge forum base that is really very nice and helpful. *As a side note: the Corpse Party game series was made with RPG Maker.

Okay, so this sounds pretty awesome and it is really! However, the tagline and options, it’s a little misleading. Yes, you can do a lot right off the bat with this game. It takes a little time to get used to the system, where everything is, etc., but you really can just up and start putting together a game from scratch. Oh, by the way, do you know how to do coding at all? Or use Ruby Script? I don’t, and I realized that knowing such things is a HUGE PLUS when using this. You see, almost everything has to do with scripting. You wish to change something with the main game-like get ride of the magic bar? You have to change the script for that. Want a flashlight that your character uses that lights a certain circumference? You need to write a script for that. I can do a lot without any scripting at all and my first game wasn’t half bad for a newbie (though I never made it public). I quickly found out though that many things I wanted to do I just couldn’t because I didn’t know how, which was frustrating and disheartening.

Not all is lost though dear gamers! Like I said, the forums are super helpful. Things not involving scripting, in my case how to have it snow outside and not have it follow you indoors, was a simple fix that I wasn’t sure how to do. Luckily someone explained the right order of buttons I had to hit and it worked. If you wanted the flashlight option I mentioned above, there are many scripts that others have written on the forums (or whole websites!). However, you either have to ask permission or mention their names in the credits-that line of script technically is there property. So there are ways around it if you don’t mind using other peoples scripts or lurking in the forums. Also, Youtube is just filled with how-to videos, walkthroughs, etc. I spent the first two days of my purchase just watching videos to learn how to do some of the basic or slightly difficult things I wanted to do. There is a whole folder on my favorites bar filled with them.

I mentioned before about packs & bundles you can buy. Caution! I didn’t realize this until after I bought a ‘modern day’ pack that it was not neatly set together like the tilesets you get with the original game. There were spaces, black spots, etc. I didn’t realize that these packs are meant for those who are familiar with programs like Photoshop to put together you own full tilesets. These are just fillers that you can use to make your own sets for your game. I have some homework to do with a photo editing program now, because dang it I want to use those sets! Money shall not be wasted. There are also many forum topics and videos on using photo editing programs on how to put these sets together or how to make your own to import. As well as making your own sprites, objects, etc.

If you’ve ever though about making your own game, or sometimes visual novel as some have done, then give this a try. It’s going to take you a LONG TIME to do so, because there is a lot of detail and technical input that goes into making a game. It’s all worth it though in my book. I have two games now that I am working on, and still learning along the way (I’ve own the game almost a year now). Each time I do a run through to work out kinds and spelling errors, I get a feeling of satisfaction and excitement to see a game I made play right before my eyes. I’m working on finding one of my friends to do artwork for character faces for speech, I’m also going to take a class on coding and scripting. Not just for the game, I’ve just always wanted to-this is just a good motivator. If one day I actually finish one of these games, I’ll put a link out there for you all. In the mean time-play on my friends!

PS Vita Slim Borderlands 2 Unboxing

I mentioned before that I was getting a PS Vita bundle, and it has arrived. My fiance was nice enough to wait for me to get home before opening it so we could get a first look at the beauty together. Pictures below of the game, the memory card & DLC card, papers, and also a comparison to the PSP & Galaxy S 3 phone for size. We are pretty excited.

My fiance has this to say about it. “The buttons are surprisingly small on the Vita. It may be due to our router, but doing game patches in bulk went really slow and kept puzting out. Individually there isn’t a problem it actually moves quite fast, but again that could be our router which isn’t the best. I haven’t played anything yet, but it reminds me of a large smart phone. The touch screen is going to make imputing text so much easier compared to the PSP. I’m looking forward to actually gaming and seeing how this does.”

PS VITA! PS VITA!

My fiance ordered a PS Vita bundle with the new Borderlands game, and it should be here within a few days. I’m so excited I just want to do a happy dance. Actually I did, after I tackled him with a huge hug. I love being with someone who understands my need for gaming and nerdiness.

Of course, rules of the house-thee who purchased it gets to play it first. So I must wait my turn on the glorious device. We already have a bunch of PS Vita games saved up on our PS3 Plus account, which gives out X free games each month. We knew one day we’d have a Vita, so we just downloaded the free ones till we were able to afford one.

And soon, soon it shall be mine.

Expect to see some PS Vita reviews in the future! Though not too soon since it’ll be a bit till I get my hands on it. In the mean time I have plenty of PS3 & PS2 games to play…
